Border Patrol finds 45 pounds of meth hidden in gas tank

Border Patrol agents arrested two people suspected of smuggling methamphetamine inside a vehicle’s gas tank early Sunday morning.

A Jeep Wrangler driven by a man, who was accompanied by a woman, arrived at Highway 86 checkpoint just after 8 a.m. An agent referred them for a secondary inspection where a canine detection team alerted to the rear section of the Jeep.

Following a search of the vehicle, agents found 40 wrapped bundles hidden inside the Jeep’s gas tank. The substances tested positive for methamphetamine. The weight of the drugs was 45.01 pounds with an estimated value of $148,533.

The man and woman, both U.S. citizens, were turned over the Drug Enforcement Administration.
