Military lawyers sent to border for immigration cases

According to MSNBC News 21 military lawyers are being sent to Arizona, Texas and New Mexico to help prosecute illegal immigration cases, the Department of Defense told MSNBC Wednesday night.

The lawyers will be appointed as full-time special assistant attorneys for up to 179 days.

According to emails obtained by MSNBC, the lawyers will be given basic training in immigration law and federal criminal procedure to assist federal prosecutors in Yuma, Arizona, Las Cruces, New Mexico, El Paso, Del Rio, Laredo and McAllen in Texas.

MSNBC said a private fundraising effort was launched to raise money for the Refugee and Immigration Center for Education and Legal Services, a nonprofit legal advocacy group in Texas that provides lawyers for immigrant children and families.

By Wednesday night, the campaign had raised almost $15 million and reset its target to $20 million.

Some people, though, say that money doesn’t solve everything, and that some immigration cases need time more than they need money.
