Ugenti-Rita files lawsuit against Shooter for slander

A former Arizona state representative might have been allowed to run for state senate Friday, but he is now facing a new lawsuit.

State Rep. Michelle Ugenti-Rita filed a lawsuit against former Rep. Don Shooter for slander Thursday, accusing him of making defamatory comments about her.

The Arizona Republic reported the lawsuit claims that after Ugenti-Rita began posting on Facebook about Shooter, he made false statements about her while defending himself. The lawsuit also states that Shooter said the state representative was lying with the promise of “dark money” campaign donations.

Don Shooter spoke exclusively to News 11 over the phone regarding the lawsuit. Shooter said, “By a strange coincidence on the day of me being able to sue Ugenti-Rita, she sued me today for sexual harassment and liable. She will lose . I promise you she will lose . But it gives me the opportunity to tell the world what the capitol community knows about Michelle Ugenti.”

Shooter also said that he is welcoming the opportunity to give his side of the story.

“It’s not your fault. All you’ve heard is one side of the story for six months. One side. So now you’re going to hear my side and I welcome that and I welcome the opportunity to tell people what the truth is,” Shooter added.
