UPDATE: Local agencies respond to drive-by shooting, fire at apartment duplex

Yuma police are investigating after a drive-by shooting and fire at an apartment building Wednesday night.

Officers were dispatched to an apartment building at 490 S. 15th Avenue at approximately 11:04 p.m. responding to shots fired.

Officers located multiple casings in the street and several bullet holes in the building, according to Yuma Police Department Sgt. Lori Franklin.

Ski Rubi a resident at one of the heavily damaged duplex’s says he heard four to five gun shots outside his home.

“After I heard the gun shots, I moved my kids to my room and then after that I heard a knock on my door saying there was a fire. From what it looks like you can see a gun shot, a little hole, and through that little hole you can see the smoke coming through,” said Rubi.

They noticed smoke coming from one of the bullet holes in the building and called the Yuma Fire Department to assist.

Fire personnel found smoke and flames coming from one of the three apartments in the building. All occupants had been able to safely evacuate the building as they contained the fire, according to Yuma Fire.

Damage was contained to the apartment but received significant damage, Yuma Fire said.

Arson investigators were called to the scene, according to police.

The other two apartments were not damaged by the fire but they were not able to be reoccupied until repairs are made. The Red Cross was on site to help assist those displaced by the fire.

This case is currently under investigation. Officials are working to determine the cause of the fire. There is no suspect information at this time.

There was no reported injuries reference to this case.
