Arizona DPS seizes more than 100 pounds of narcotics

An Arizona Department of Public Safety Border Strike Force member seized more than 100 pounds of narcotics during a traffic stop on May 30.

It happened just before 10:00 a.m. on westbound Interstate-10 in Pima County when a Ford pickup was pulled over for a traffic stop after indicators of criminal activity.

After a vehicle search, 92.55 pounds of methamphetamine, 8.15 pounds of fentanyl, and 1.8 pounds of heroin were seized.

With 2 milligrams of fentanyl being a potentially lethal dose, the amount of fentanyl seized is capable of killing over one million people, according to Arizona DPS.

The sole occupant of the vehicle, 40-year-old Gustavo Vicente Torres Garcia of Mexico was booked on multiple charges including possession of dangerous drugs and transportation of dangerous drugs.

Detectives from the Border Strike Force Criminal Targeting Unit, as well as highway patrol troopers, assisted with the investigation.

The Arizona street value of the seized drugs is estimated to be just over $520,000.

“The Border Strike Force, time and time again, has proven successful since its inception in 2015… drug and human trafficking in Arizona is real and this seizure is only one example of many showing our dedicated effort to make Arizona and the entire country safer” said Governor Doug Ducey.
