Following up with Imperial County Primary Election preliminary results

After months of campaigning, the big day for candidates are over. Now they wait as ballots are still coming in.

In the Imperial Irrigation Division 1 race, El Centro Council Member Alex Cardenas is currently beating incumbent Juanita Salas. And so far, Cardenas is pretty confident with the lead. “We knew that this wasn’t going to be easy. We’re very fortunate to have a ten point lead at this point. Which is very commanding. But again, we were all pretty anxious and pretty stressed out about this whole campaign.”

He believes it’s because voters wanted growth in their community. “Well, I believe the voters are looking for prosperity. Local prosperity. And IID is a key agency in bringing economic development. And so they are looking for our valley to change and provide prosperity to our region in terms of economic development, jobs. They’re looking for a director who can create policy.”

But for another incumbent, things are looking up. County Supervisor for District 1, John Renison says it’s his relation with residents that have him in the lead. “I think experience. I think the reliability and the fact that I get back to people and I’m responsive. Those have always been my qualities and I will continue to do that.”

Renison believes it’s his results from his time on the job that will keep him serving his community.
“I just feel that the people feel that I responded to their needs the last seven plus years. And before that I was on the city council of Calexico. So I kinda have a proven track record of being around all the time not just during election.

Attempts were made to contact Juanita Salas were unsuccessful. Officials from the registrars of voters office say more preliminary results should be released by tomorrow evening.
