SCAM ALERT: El Centro PD warns community of money scam suspect

El Centro Police Department is warning the public of a new money scam happening in the community.

Officers are describing the suspect as an African American man, in his mid 50’s, about 5’11, and 240 pounds.

The man has short curly hair with a Jamaican accent and carries a fanny pack around the waist. He was last seen wearing dark athletic clothing.

He approaches his victims requesting assistance to hold a large sum of money he is hiding from his girlfriend. He then requests the victim to place a sum of money of their own with his in order for trust to be gained. He then appears to place the combined money inside a folded bandana and will then place the folded bandana inside what is considered a safe place within your personal belongings or vehicle where you would not have immediate access.

According to officers, he leaves with the agreement he will return shortly but victims are discovering it is actually a folded newspaper and that their money is missing.

Calexico police are asking everyone to be cautious and contact the police department at (760) 352-2111 should you see or are approached by the suspect.
