National guard deploys to help El Centro section border patrol

The valley is getting 51 national guard members to protect the US Mexico border here in Calexico. According to one official from El Centro sector border patrol, it’s critical that the national guard is here because of the limited number of border patrol agents in the area.

” Border security, is national security. The role of the national guard is critical here. As their deployment to the El Centro sector, will allow us to better secure our border. And raise interdiction effectiveness. As well as our situational awareness,” said Gloria Chavez, El Centro Border Patrol Chief.

The role of the national guard is to advise and guide in support behind the scenes. “They will be assisting us in mission support roles. They will be as I mentioned earlier, focused on targeting trans national organizations, gangs, and the elicit transportation of drugs and weapons. Behind the scenes.”

One city official from Calexico, is frustrated by the lack of dialogue between the federal government and local agencies. Maritza Hurtado, Mayor of Calexico said, ” the fact that they came out, the fact that they consistently have us in the news. It’s a good thing because we’re on the map. But at the same time, one day I really do appreciate that someone sits down and listens.”

The El Centro sector border will count on the support from the national guard until the end of the fiscal year this September.
