Yuma teacher walks to State Capitol, joins thousands in ‘Red for Ed’ march

Thousands of teachers, educators and supporters marched to the Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix on Thursday, in solidarity for educators across Arizona.

Kathy Hoover, a Kofa High School teacher, joined thousands in the march Thursday.

She said she decided to take her voice to the Capitol to send a clear message to Arizona legislators.

“I wanted to represent Yuma here in Phoenix,” Hoover said. “I wanted to stand up for Yuma County.”

Several other Phoenix marchers said they’re taking a stand for educators because they believe education should be a priority in the state of Arizona.

“It’s not about the money for us,” Maria Moreno, a Phoenix teacher said. “Because if it was, we wouldn’t be teachers. We’re here for them.”

According to demonstration organizers, walkouts will continue through Friday across the state.

Yuma school districts have yet to determine closures for Monday.
