School districts across Yuma County share plans regarding statewide teacher walkout
School districts across Yuma County announced their plans Monday regarding the walkouts planned statewide this Thursday, April 26.
Organizers for Arizona Educators United announced that school districts across the state should expect a teacher walk out.
Crane Elementary School District
Crane School District announced all schools will remain open Thursday and Friday in exception of Ronald Reagan Elementary School. The district released a statement Tuesday stating the elementary school will be closed to the inability to maintain student safety and adequate supervision.
Desert View Academy
Should a teacher walkout occur, DVA will make every effort to avoid school closure. However, to ensure the safety of their students it may be necessary to shut down all school operations. If they are unable to hold school, they will use all modes of communication to alert families and on their parent alert system found on their site.
Gadsden Elementary School District
Gadsden Elementary S chool District (GESD) will also close all district schools on Thursday, April 26th, Friday, April 27th, and Monday, April 30th to ensure student safety and are uncertain of the duration of the walkouts
According to a statement released Friday, GESD school cafeterias will remain open to provide breakfast from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and lunch from 11:00 to noon.
Hyder School District in Dateland
The Hyder School District superintendent confirmed that Thursday will continue as planned. No walkouts have been confirmed at this time. However, it was stressed how much they support the movement and support all efforts of teachers state-wide.
Mohawk Valley Elementary School District in Roll
The Mohawk Valley School District has stated that although they support the need for increased funding for teachers and schools, they will not be participating in the strike. Classes will resume as normal for the remainder of the week. If you have any questions, they ask that you feel free to contact the school.
Quartzsite School District
Quartzsite School District has been working with educators to determine the number of walk-out participants and if they would have adequate personnel to continue operations. After a review, they have decided to close schools on Thursday, April 26 as of Wednesday.
The district plans to keep school cafeterias open to provide breakfast from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:00 a.m. to noon.
Somerton School District
Somerton School District is also informing parents to consider alternative plans due to school closures for Thursday, Friday, April 27th and Monday, April 30th. The Somerton School District added that lack of staffing and the safety of students are being considered.
The district will keep their cafeterias open on Friday to offer breakfast from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Free meals will be available for anyone 18 years of age and under.
Wellton Elementary School
The Wellton School District Administration, teachers, and staff support the ideas promoted by the nationwide movement; however, will not be participating in the walkouts. The school will remain open.
Yuma Union High School District
All Yuma Union High School District campuses will be closed Thursday, April 26th, and Friday, April 27th. This is due to teachers participating in a statewide movement to increase funding.
“After reviewing data related to the number of teachers who requested leave, we decided it was not a viable option for our campuses to remain open and keep students safe and secure,” YUHSD Superintendent Gina Thompson said.
YUHSD will be announcing their decision whether to continue closures for district schools on Saturday, April 28th.
The district is allowing students to participate in scheduled extracurricular activities during the walkout, only if the appropriate coach, advisor or board-approved, a certificated employee is available and supervising the activity or event.
Yuma Elementary School District One
Yuma Elementary School District One released a statement with plans to close all their schools on Thursday, April 26 th , Friday, April 27 th , and Monday, April 30th .
The district is advising parents to consider an alternative plan for students. They added that all school cafeterias will remain open to provide breakfast from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m., and lunch from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. for students.
Transportation will not be available; however, the district will be offering breakfast and lunch for students in the community.
“If a family comes in, we will feed the family…[we are] trying to feed students at all costs,” said Lisa Thrower, Director of Child Nutrition, at Yuma Elementary School District One.
Yuma Catholic High School
Yuma Catholic High School will continue with regular class schedules for Thursday and Friday.
Harvest Preparatory Academy
Harvest Preparatory Academy will also have regular class schedules for Thursday.
