Groups to hand out free food to students during walkout

Arizona teachers plan to walk out of class April 26th.

Several families are wondering where their children will get food throughout the walkout. Below we have compiled a list of food options for students in Yuma County.

The Vertical Church

Location: 3142 S Arizona Ave, Yuma, AZ 85364

On Wednesday, The Vertical Church along with First Christian Church, The Rock Church, Oasis Church, Ekklesia Church, The Refinery Church, Champion Church, Church for the City, and The Vertical Church delivered hundreds of power packs to local schools

If the teacher walkouts continue onto next week, Communications Director Kyle McLaughlin from The Vertical Church, said families who already receive the power packs can pick them up at the church.

Precious Treasures Mission

Location: 492 E Main St, Somerton, AZ 85350

The non-profit organization will be offering breakfast and lunch at their youth center for students in Somerton. They expect to serve 300 children during breakfast hours from 8 p.m. 9 m.m. and 300 for lunch from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Kitzya Leal Quintero, the director of Precious Treasures Mission, said they will do everything in their power to make sure kids in the community eat.

Dragon de Oro Restaurant

Location: 257 West Main Street, Somerton, AZ 85350

Dragon de Oro restaurant will be offering free lunch for students from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Students must present their student ID to receive the meal.

Yuma Elementary School District One

All school cafeterias will remain open to provide breakfast from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m., and lunch from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. for students.

Gadsden Elementary School District

According to a statement released Tuesday, GESD school cafeterias will remain open to provide breakfast from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and lunch from 11:00 to noon.

Quartzsite School District

The district plans to keep school cafeterias open to provide breakfast from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:00 a.m. to noon.
