Pet shelter says animals have rights

Four puppies are up for adoption at Dee’s Rescue: Beauty, Freckles, Brownie and Chicken Nugget. They were part of an adoption event held on Saturday at Calexico Brewing Company. We asked event organizers what it took to house break them.

Calexico Resident Alma Robles said, “I think they’re like children. It’ll take maybe a couple of tries, but you need to train them to not do whatever they’re doing. They have to learn to go on the potty pads. Just patience. Patience.”

She said puppies need lots of attention.

“They like to socialize with people, so we can’t just leave them alone. Obviously feeding them and providing them with a good home and also spending time with them because they’re very social animals,” Robles said.

Calexico Resident Daniela Flores said pet owners need to educate themselves.

“You can get tips from the internet on how people train them, but it really has to do with being patient and repetition,” Flores said.

These four puppies are the same age as Clark, a puppy allegedly shot and killed recently in Imperial by his owner for urinating inside the house. Dee’s Rescue said animal cruelty should not be tolerated.

“I think that they should have rights. I think that they should be cared for like babies. They’re part of your family. Some of them protect you,” Forbey said.

“It should definitely be considered a crime. They have a life,” Flores said.

They said puppies can learn quickly if given a chance.

“You pick them up and put them outside and tell them what to do, when they get up from their nap, after they eat. They learn real fast. They’re very, very smart,” Forbey said.

“I think every pup has their own personality. So, some of them are really quick to pick up on learning new things, but others might take a little bit longer. So, there’s not one formula for all,” Robles said.

Dee’s Rescue can be reached on Facebook by anyone wishing to adopt a puppy.
