Yuma’s own secret garden helps teach people about our native plants

In this week’s Home Grown segment we take a look at one of Yuma’s little hidden treasures, the Moody Garden.

The Robert J. Moody demonstration garden was dedicated to the city of Yuma on April 18, 2004.

Today. most people may not realize this adorable secret garden is right in our own backyard. It’s right off of 28th street on the west side of the Yuma County Public Health Services parking lot.

This whimsical garden is operated through the Master Gardeners program, ran by Janine Lane. She educates people on gardening and Yuma agriculture. She certifies other master gardeners who then serve as volunteers to help educate others in the community on local agriculture.

“They teach people how to grow plants and that’s a lot of what this demonstration is, on how to grow not only native plants but even some garden plants and things like that,” Russell Engel director of the Yuma County Cooperative Extension said. “The master gardeners that she educates are a big volunteer force that help her do this and many other things,” he added.

Everyone is welcome to take a stroll through the garden. You’ll find fresh vegetables growing and beautiful flowers. It’s a great place to sit and read a book or take children to play and learn more about our native plants and agriculture.
