Fruition of nutrition month for ICPHD

The month of March is National Nutrition month, and just like this year’s theme, the Imperial County Public Health Department is helping the community go further with their food.
We spoke with Jorge Torres, Program Supervisor at the Imperial Country Public Health Department, who said that, “national nutrition month is a campaign that’s celebrated annually in March. And it is a campaign that focuses on nutrition education and promoting healthy eating, and promoting physical activity.”

They’re also working closely with local schools to promote their campaign. “So in Imperial Valley, we’re doing several activities. This month we started off doing nutrition education at Central Union High school, to promote the national school breakfast week. And as part of national school breakfast week we did nutritional education resource tables. We had food demonstrations, and we also had a walk up to promote walking to school.”

Jorge says the nutrition education classes have a lot to offer. He says, “they’ll learn how to eat, using USDA requirements. They’ll learn about portion control. They’ll learn how to be physically active. And they’ll learn about drinking healthier beverages. Just making little modifications to whatever they’re eating right now. ”

The Imperial County Public Health Department hold three nutrition education classes every month. For more information find out on their website or their social media.
