Officials said a city employee was stopped by police on Wednesday after work. Police found documents in the vehicle which had information regarding missing city funds. City officials said as much as $600,000 were recently unaccounted for during an internal audit. The employee works in the finance department and has been paid on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.
Council Member Armando Real said this comes at a time when the city is laying off employees and asking others to take pay cuts.
“We’re definitely going through a hard time financially. When you hear these things it hurts. It hurts to feel that anybody could be skimming off the top or anything like that, specifically an employee,” Real said.
City officials said charges in the case are expected as soon as next week.
