Border Patrol agents arrest convicted felon

Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Ajo Station arrested a previously-deported Mexican man Thursday afternoon and later discovered he was convicted and incarcerated for Class A felonies in 2007.

Agents patrolling near Gila Bend arrested 27-year-old Jose Cruz-Colmenares for being illegally present in the United States. During processing, a records check revealed a prior conviction in Multnomah County, Oregon, for a ttempted rape and sodomy. He was sentenced to four years in prison for his crimes.

Cruz will remain in federal custody pending prosecution for criminal immigration violations.

All persons apprehended by the Border Patrol undergo criminal history checks using biometrics to ensure illegal immigrants with criminal histories are positively identified.
