Arizona Rep. announces U.S. Senate campaign
Arizona Rep. Martha McSally officially announced her campaign for the U.S. Senate on Friday. She now joins former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and former State Senator Kelli Ward.
McSally is a retired Air Force colonel, known to be the first female fighter pilot to fly in combat. She launched her campaign in similar fashion, flying in on a World War II-era fighter plane.
She promised that her determination and drive will help Arizona and the country.
Rick Scuteri/ AP Earlier today, McSally released a video announcing her campaign that emphasized both her military background and her relationship with President Donald Trump McSally showed support for President Trump’s agenda, making comparisons of her style to the President’s. In her announcement video, she said “like our president, I’m tired of PC politicians and their BS excuses. I’m a fighter pilot, and I talk like one. That’s why I told Washington Republicans to grow a pair of ovaries and get the job done.”
McSally is now in the race for retiring Senator Jeff Flake’s soon-to-be vacant seat.
Her opponents — Arpaio and Ward — have also painted a picture of themselves to Arizona voters as loyal to the President’s agenda.
The winner of the Republican nomination is expected to face Representative Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) in the general election. Sinema is backed by national Democrats and has over $5.1 million invested in her campaign, according to a campaign press release.
