Local Mayor Pro-Tem announces his candidacy for Imperial County District Attorney.

El Centro Mayor Pro-Tem and lawyer Edgard Garcia is challenging the District Attorney.

“This morning we went into the county administration building and we picked up our petition in lieu of filing, because I’m officially announcing that I’m running for District Attorney of Imperial County,” Garcia said.

He said the D.A. is doing a bad job.

“The office has become a little bit complacent in their prosecution of felonies, specifically serious felonies,” Garcia explained.

He said there’s a need for change.

“Hopefully, we can bring some new energy into the office and some new leadership and reach out to the people and give them the justice that they deserve,” Garcia said.

He said his 10 years of private law practice and community service qualify him for the position.

“As a city councilman, I’ve had the rare opportunity of seeing just some of the crimes that have occurred in our city and the lack of prosecution. I’ve been able to hear the voices of the people and there’s been basically a little bit of dissatisfaction in how the office has been running,” Garcia said.

Gilbert Otero has served as Imperial County District Attorney for the past 22 years. He also currently serves on the Imperial Valley Drug Coalition and is Chair for the Imperial County Narcotics Task Force.

We reached out to the District Attorney’s Office for comment but they were not available. Elections will be held on June 5 th .
