Man dies after being struck by car in Salton Sea area

A man is dead following a fatal collision after his vehicle broke down on State Route 86 near the Salton Sea area.

At around 10:10 p.m. Wednesday, a Hispanic 55-year-old man from Bell Gardens, Calif. was driving a 1992 Nissan Sentra northbound on State Route 86 when his vehicle broke down.

The man parked his Nissan on the right shoulder of the road and exited the Nissan, walking out into the darkness without a flashlight or reflective clothing.

The Bell Gardens resident walked into the middle of lanes where 54-year-old Carmen Zepeda was driving her 2016 Ford Explorer at 65 MPH with her granddaughter in a car seat.

The 55-year-old man was struck by the left front of Zepeda’s Ford leading him to land on the left shoulder. The man sustained fatal injuries at the scene.

Zepeda sustained minor injuries and authorities determined that she was not under the influence during the investigation. Alcohol was not a factor in the collision.

An investigation for the collision is currently underway.
