On Thursday morning Minnesota Senator Al Franken stood before a crowded Senate and addressed his constituents. Senator Franken announced that in the coming weeks he would be resigning in lieu of allegations involving sexual misconduct. To date eight women have come forward and publicly accused the senator; Senator Franken has apologized for some of his behavior, but has said some of the allegations are untrue.
After the allegations surfaced more than 30 of his fellow democrats called for his resignation. Franken says he’s walking away so that Minnesota’s next senator can focus on the job at hand. Franken’s staff and several senators could be seen crying during his speech; Franken added that although he will stepped down, he will not be silent.
Before leaving the podium he took the opportunity to make one final statement, “I am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the Oval Office and a man who repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the Senate with the full support of his party. But this decision is not about me. It’s about the people of Minnesota.”
