For many, Minnesota Senator Al Franken doesn’t fit the bill of career politician. Prior to taking office the senator was a comedian who worked alongside comedic legends such as Chevy Chase and Dennis Miller. Now, the former comedian is facing a situation that is no laughing matter as a woman has come forward accusing the senator of sexual harassment.
The victim, Leeann Tweeden, was a former USO co-host and at the time of the assault was performing alongside Franken on a base in the middle east during the 2006 USO Tour. According to Tweeden, Franken forced himself on her and kissed her, she also said that Franken posed for a picture where he groped her as she slept.
Senator Franken did not deny the allegations and immediately apologized to Tweeden and broadened the apology to include all women. In an apology letter, Franken noted that back then he had a different mindset and even some of his material as a comedian appears in poor taste when he looks back. Senator Franken added that an investigation should be done and that he will cooperate fully.
