77-year-old man arrested after allegedly strangling woman he met online

A 77-year-old man was arrested after allegedly strangling a woman he met on an online dating site.

The victim, a 23-year-old woman, told Newport News Police she got into a fight with 77-year-old Alan Richard Schmitt, on Oct. 22. She said it happened when they met up in person after messaging each other on the dating site Plenty of Fish.

Police say Schmitt portrayed himself as a much younger person online.

During the fight, Schmitt allegedly grabbed the woman by the neck and threw her to the ground, got on top of her and started strangling her.

Schmitt was arrested at the scene and charged with one count of strangulation. He was taken to the Newport News City Jail.
