Road closure on Arizona Avenue
The Yuma Police Department said Arizona Avenue is currently closed at 20th Street for underground work installing water and sewer lines.
Yuma city officials siad through traffic should consider an alternate route such as 1st Avenue or Pacific Avenue. The following detours are available:
Factor Avenue via 18th Place and 22nd Street. Walnut Avenue via 19th Street and 21st Street.
Business access is currently available via northbound Arizona Avenue from 24th Street; motorists will be able to travel north on Arizona past the detour sign at 22nd Street to reach businesses from the Yuma Sun to the south.
If work proceeds without complication, the closure is currently slated to last through Friday, Oct. 27.
A second phase of this work is scheduled for Nov. 16-24. This will take place at Arizona Avenue and 22nd Street, where 22nd will be right-turn-only for northbound Arizona Avenue motorists with a detour to Factor Avenue. Arizona Avenue will be closed to through-traffic southbound motorists at 20th Street, while business access to locations south of 20th Street will be maintained.
The City incorrectly published this second phase of work on social media as being the first phase of work, resulting in incorrect information being printed in the Yuma Sun. The City regrets this error.
There are warning signs from both directions advising of this closure before you get to 20th Street. There are detour signs with an arrow informing drivers that the road is closed and pointing in the direction that will take them around the closure.
YPD said drivers are ignoring these warnings and causing back-ups because they have to turn around after finding out that the road really is closed.
YPD said this intersection will be closed all week. When the roadway is opened, the “ROAD CLOSED” signs will be taken down.
