City approves grant application for local transportation hub
The Yuma City Council approved a resolution to support a grant application that would help make the Hotel Del Sol into a transportation hub.
One a four-to-two vote Wednesday night during the regular city council meeting, the city voted to move forward with the grant. The grant is asking for almost $12 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation, with a 20 percent city match that would amount to almost $3 million.
According to city officials, a 1995-2015 countywide transportation study was prepared by local planning and transportation stakeholders to address the transportation needs for residents and visitors of Yuma County.
The study recognized a need for public transportation services and creating a safe and convenient place where residents could access these services. The Hotel Del Sol was selected as the best site for this transportation hub.
The grant is part of the TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) program. It gives state and local stakeholders an opportunity to apply for $500 million in grant funding.
“The TIGER grant program is a highly competitive program whose winners will be awarded with the funding they need to rebuild the infrastructure of their communities,” said Secretary Elaine L. Chao. “TIGER grants will continue to fund innovative projects that will improve the safety of America’s passengers and goods.”
TIGER grant recipients will be announced in late spring or early summer of 2018.
