Five organizations come together to raise flag at The Big Curve

Five fraternal organizations in Yuma held a flag raising ceremony today. The organizations include American Legion Post 19, Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 835, the Marine Corps League, the Patriot Guard and the Legacy Vets. The organizations came together to raise an American flag over the South end of the city in the Sears parking lot.

The idea came from a former U.S. Marine and American Legion member, Mike Haley, who located the owners of the flag pole and asked if the organizations could contribute to the purchase of the flag. The American Legion Color Guard also provided a stream sounding 21 Gun Salute and a Reveille.

About 60 personnel from these groups decided to raise it for all of the city to see as they passed by.

The flag was unraveled with 25 personnel holding it and 6 men and women raising the stars and stripes as the wind carried the flag for the perfect view.

Vietnam and Korean veterans joined in the crowd along with two World War II veterans.
