Banned Books Week

2017 marks the 35th anniversary of Banned Books Week. Observed since 1982, this annual American Library Association event reminds Americans to celebrate their freedom to read!

Beginning Monday, September 25th, sign up to do “time in the slammer” and read in a Library jail cell! Cells are located inside the Main, Foothills, Heritage, San Luis, Somerton, and Wellton, and are available for half-hour intervals during library open hours.

Banned Books Week is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, American Library Association, American Society of Journalists and Authors, Association of American Publishers, National Association of College Stores, and is endorsed by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.

Banned Books Bingo

Celebrate your freedom to read at the Heritage Library! On Wednesday, September 27th, at 11:00 a.m. and Saturday, September 30th, at 1:00 p.m., readers are invited to play Banned Books Bingo. Grab a bingo card and try to figure out why some of the great books in literature have been banned. All ages welcome; children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. There is no charge to attend.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Life of Jose Maria Morelos

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the Heritage Library! On Friday, September 29th, the Heritage Library, in collaboration with the Mexican Consulate and the City of Yuma, will host a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. to honor the life of Jose Maria Morelos, a Roman Catholic priest and revolutionary leader in 19th century Mexico. After the presentation, attendees are invited to view a statue of Jose Maria Morelos, located on the North East corner of the Library Park. The statue was donated by the Mexican Consulate to the City of Yuma in 2010.
