Storm slams Desert Southwest; causing damage and power outages

A strong storm system hit the Desert Southwest Friday afternoon, bringing with it hail and strong wind that knocked down several power lines and trees.

Arizona Public Service said more than 800 people are without power in Yuma as of 8:08 p.m. and according to the latest update, their power won’t be restored until midnight.

The areas where Yuma residents have been affected are:

14 people were affected from 1st Street to 2nd Street and 7th Avenue to 5th Avenue.

5 people were affected from 12th Street to 21st Street and 2nd Avenue to Kennedy Lane.

611 people were affected from 8th Street to 24th Street and Castle Dome to Avenue 3E

149 people were affected from 6th Street to 20th Street and Arizona Avenue to Lee Drive.

20 people were affected from 9th Street to 10th Street and 6th Avenue to 5th Avenue.

Residential customers affected by the outages in the Yuma area can purchase up to 40 pounds of wet bagged ice or 20 pounds of dry ice to help preserve perishables in their refrigerators and freezers.

The Yuma Fire Department tweeted about power lines and trees down due to storm activity and are advising residents to stay off the roads to avoid traffic congestion.

Yuma Fire also advised to treat all downed lines as live power lines and to stay away from them.

4 people were affected from County 17th Street and Somerton Avenue. Power is expected to be restored by 11:15 p.m.

6 people were affected from Fulton Street to Jacobs Street and Van Brunt Avenue to Carlisle Avenue. Power is expected to be restored by midnight.
