Local Classroom offers comfortable seating for students
The hardest part of Ms. Rhakola’s writing class is finding a place to sit.
It’s not about sitting in front of the classroom anymore, but it’s more so finding what to sit on. This year Rhakola replaced the standard desk and chair with yoga balls, bean bag chairs, and even a full sized couch.
“I think that teachers have to change the way they do “school”.I think that we have to change the way we allow students to learn, and if that means getting them a comfortable area that is “cool”, I think that is a way to reach them,” Rhakola said.
For students, they’re liking the new changes in the classroom.
Eliana Caro says,”I think I learn better with this kind of seating.Regular seating you’re kind of used to it, and it can get boring, but here it’s different. It makes it more fun.”
Seventh grader Allan Wilson adds on saying, “This is my favorite classroom. You never see stuff like this. A couch or a yoga ball, it’s unique to me.
It’s an idea that started last school year. Rhakola asked students for some suggestions and set up a Donor Choose page online. A site dedicated to raising money for school supplies.
“The fact that so many people saw what I saw in these kids and saw what they needed and how much they were going to benefit from it. I just love that people help others without knowing them. It’s a beautiful thing.”
