Red Cross Yuma deploys the most volunteers ever from local area
Hurricane Harvey, the first Category 4 hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. since 2004, continues to threaten the lives of the people in Texas. The American Red Cross has mobilized a massive relief effort to provide food, shelter and comfort to those who’s lives have been devastated by the storm and the assistance will continue over the next several weeks, and possibly months. The Red Cross says it will remain to help residents recover from this catastrophic event.
Hundreds of Red Cross disaster workers from all over the country are helping people impacted by the hurricane and thousands more will be asked to deploy in the weeks to come as people begin to recover from the storm. Over 20 staff and volunteers from the Red Cross Arizona have deployed with several more due to leave in the upcoming weeks.
Yuma, Arizona has two volunteers already in Texas, two more that leave on Monday, August 28, and another that will leave on Tuesday, August 29.
“This will be the most Red Cross volunteers deployed from the Yuma Area ever,” says Charly McMurdie, PIO for Yuma Red Cross.
According to records, there were only a couple volunteers that deployed to past disasters. “We are thankful to have all of our volunteers, but we are in need of many more,” states McMurdie.
30 staff and volunteers from the Red Cross Arizona, New Mexico and El Paso Region have been deployed: 23 from Arizona, 5 from New Mexico, 2 from El Paso.
