Brawley Police hosts annual community event

The Brawley Police Department held their 5th Annual Splash Party on Saturday.

The event is a great opportunity for the community to get to know the officers and enjoy free food too.

News 11 was the Lions Center for the fun.

“This gives the citizens and the kids here to kind of see us differently were we are hanging out just having a good time swimming, drinking soda and having food,” said Luis Sanchez, Agent with the Brawley Police Department.

People who attended the party enjoyed free hot dogs, shaved ice and more. The day’s activities expecting to draw a crowd of 200 or more people and each year that number keeps growing.

“It’s a real good event for the youth of the community and even the adults of the community, they can all come out enjoy some swimming during the hot summer, and they also get introduced and they get to meet police officers and other public safety employees that are associated with our police department. And they are able to interact with them, so it creates better community relations I think,” said Sam Couchman, Mayor of Brawley.

The police station along with their explorers program caters the event for the day.

“Our role is to mentor them; they learn the basic fundamentals of law enforcement. Once they’ve completed explorer academy they are welcome to go out on police ride-alongs, they get to see what we do day in and day out,” mentioned Sanchez.

“To me, I joined for the experience, so it won’t hurt you in any way, it will honestly benefit you. So for anybody who isn’t sure of their future, they should just give it a try and just go for it, it’s worth it,” said Esperanza Beltran, College Freshmen and Brawley Police Explorer.

“Were also having coffee with a cop event on Monday at our local Starbucks, so they can check that out on our city page and were there and available,” added Couchman.
