Calexico Police warned residents to watch their mailboxes and report any suspicious activity around them by anyone. Police say if possible to safely videotape people they see acting suspicious around their mailboxes.
The warning went out this week in the form of an announcement on social media.
Police said several people have reported their mailboxes broken into and losing valuable information and checks. The vandalism on mailboxes has been happening all over town; it’s not limited to one specific area.
Calexico Police Investigator Armando Orozco said breaking into a mailbox is a felony and punishable with jail time.
“Breaking into a mailbox is a federal offense. If someone is seen lurking around lurking around a mailbox, we recommend to call your local police department and advise them of the suspicious nature. And let the police department come and speak with them,” Orozco said.
Calexico Police said if anyone is going to record somebody acting suspiciously around their mailbox, to do it at a safe distance, don’t share it on social media, and immediately report it to the police.
