Man arrested after standoff near Somerton Middle School

Students at Somerton Middle School were released early due to the standoff at a home near Canal Street and Somerton Avenue Wednesday.

Somerton Police Chief Jeffery T. Cavender reported there was a ‘soft lockdown’ at Somerton Middle School due to a standoff happening at a home nearby.

A warrant was issued to search the residence in reference to a fraud-schemes case and detectives had a probable cause to arrest 37-year-old Alfredo Ibarra if found inside the home.

Prior to Yuma Police Department arriving on scene, Border Patrol agents previously had an incident with Ibarra that led them to 100 Block of W. Canal Street

A SWAT team also arrived on scene to assist with the incident. A barricade was set up around the home by at approximately 12:08 p.m. and officials notified the occupants to come out.

Two men later exited the back side of the home at around 2:18 p.m. and were soon detained. Border Patrol took both men into custody and it was confirmed that Alfredo Ibarra still remained inside the home.

Officials warned Ibarra again with no success and gas was deployed into the home.

At 6:11 p.m. officers entered the home and Ibarra was arrested. Ibarra was taken into custody and will be booked into the Yuma County Detention Center.
