“Little Free Libraries” give a book, take a book exchange
United Way of Yuma is starting an initiative that will encourage both children and adults read more books.
“Free Little Libraries” is an idea of a book exchange. Give a book, take a book. The little libraries will be coming to a neighborhood near you soon.
United Way of Yuma wanted to begin the initiative that coincides with the organization’s mission, which is to help break the poverty cycle for Yuma County residents.
The organization is working with the Littlewood Fine Art and Community CoOp to help decorate the little libraries, which will be used from old, unused newspaper bins. Thanks to sponsors and donations, the little libraries will be placed already filled with books. Don’t forget, the idea of the “Little Free Library” is to give a book, take a book.
The little libraries are coming to the communities because 61% of low-income families don’t have access to books, according to CEO of United Way of Yuma, Karina Jones. With the library, they’re hoping to instill the love of books to children, as well as help build community.
“Building community is just one of the positives that come out of it. But the whole point, really, is to instill the love of reading and get these kids reading at home. One in six children, if they’re not reading at grade level by the third grade, they’re going to drop out,” Jones added.
United Way of Yuma is looking to place these libraries all over Yuma County by at least early September. United Way of Yuma also says anyone can sponsor their own little library.
