Road repairs aim to be completed before school begins

The city of El Centro is putting taxpayer’s money to good use with street repairs throughout the roadways.

Drivers may start seeing delays and closures starting Wednesday, and they will continue into next week.

Road repairs will begin in downtown El Centro starting early next week, But other roads are being closed earlier and official told us what drivers need to look out for.

“Every year we invest close to one to two million dollars in our streets and keeping them up to shape,” said Abraham Campos, Deputy City Engineer with the City of El Centro.

The city is currently in great paving condition and Campos tell us they take great pride in their rating score of 70.

“That’s a very good rating, it’s in line with other major agencies and right now it’s just a continuation of those efforts,” mentioned Campos.

The road repairs will be taking place on over 20 streets throughout the city and is depicted by special software.

“The software is put together by somebody actually walking the streets making a pavement conditioning index, basically how bad the street is. Does it crack, is it just alligator cracking, is it falling apart, does it have pot holes or not,” explained Campos.

After these questions, they streets are prioritized based on the condition and work that needs to be done. And because these repairs will be happening all over town, drivers are being asked to take extra precaution.

“It’s happening all over, from Main Street to La Brucherie, to residential areas, it’s touching a little bit of everything,” said Campos.

“In many cases in construction zones fines are doubled in some cases, some cases they just simply increase,” said Aaron Reel, Commander with El Centro Police Department.

“Just follow the signs, closures are limited, we ask for your patience. It’s only a few hours. We’ve been asked to fix the roads, we’re fixing the roads,” added Campos.

The city hopes to have all road repairs completed before school starts in hopes of easing traffic congestion.
