Topic of the Day: Maverick under fire

It was news that sent a ripple across the globe, and for most who know of Arizona Senator John McCain they hold him in high regard. Senator McCain was diagnosed with a form of brain cancer. In a recent tweet McCain posted, “I’ll be back soon, so stand by.” It’s a message to the world that he’s not done just yet.

Although his present condition has been met with overwhelming sympathy, one political contender may see his illness as an opportunity to take his seat. Dr. Kelli Ward has voiced her opinion about the six-term senator; in her professional opinion she feels that the senator should step down and be with his family.

“I would never presume to say what someone’s prognosis is without having exams,” Ward, a 48-year-old doctor, said in the radio interview. “As a Christian, I know there can always be miracles. But the likelihood that John McCain is going to come back to the Senate and be at full force for the people of our state and the people of the United States is low.”

Ward who ran against McCain mentioned that she should be placed in his seat if he were not able to return to the senate. Ward is set to run against Senator Flake in 2018; when Senator Flake heard about Ward’s comments he told reporters, “John McCain is a fighter and an American hero. I fully expect to see him back in the Senate soon,” Flake said. “I’m dumbstruck by Kelli Ward’s comments.”
