Local agency offering free smoke alarms for seniors
The Burn Institute in Imperial County is offering to install free smoke alarms for seniors.
The non-profit health agency says most fatal fires occur at night and taking safety preparations could save a life.
“We’ve found through our local fire departments that fires are prevalent throughout Imperial County and in order to address that situation we have a smoke alarm installation program,” said Ricardo Moran, Director of Prevention Programs with The Burn Institute.
The Burn Institute is based out of San Diego but services the Imperial Valley too. They say having properly working smoke alarms cuts your chances of dying in a house fire by 50 percent.
“Our volunteers in conjunction with red cross will also teach residents how to evacuate safely and in case of a fire and also provide information with fire safety tips,” explained Moran.
In order to qualify you must be 62 years or older and must own your home. The Burn Institute also collaborates with the local American Red Cross who provides services for all walks of life and ages in Imperial County.
“They provide us with smoke alarms, and so those smoke alarms are available to install to any resident who’s in need,” added Moran.
The smoke alarms that are installed are expected to last up to 10 years.
“In July of 2015 California law changed so that all smoke alarms being sold have to be 10 year lithium battery alarms,” said Moran.
The Burn Institute suggests you test your alarm at least once a month to make sure the loud beeping sound works.
“Most home fires occur at night, usually between 11 p.m. and 4 am. And so if you’re sleeping and there’s a fire and your smoke alarm isn’t working. The danger is the chemicals released in the smoke; actually put you into a deeper sleep,” explained Moran.
This program is funded by the Imperial County Benefit Community Program and the Burn Institute says people in both Imperial and Yuma Counties can reach out to their local American Red Cross that has a nationwide home fire campaign if you’re in need of smoke alarms.
