ADOT’s Roundabout Project on Araby Road and I-8
The project consists of two roundabouts on the north and south side fo the interchange that is expected to help with traffic flow. Restrictions have been placed on the north side of the interchange but the construction doesn’t begin until July 17th and will be completed by November 1st, 2017. ADOT’s Tom Herrmann, says phase one will be complete just in time before the winter visitors come and our agriculture season begins. “It’s a very very busy place where the traffic is very high. We’re confident that once this project is in place it will allow people to move more quickly, more smoothly, and more safely. We think it’s a very important project in a very important area.” The project was funded by the Arizona State Transporation after awarding an eight million dollar contract to J. Banicki Construction. According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, roundabout intersections are becoming more common and are even safer that a four way stop intersection, reducing the amount of fatal crashes about 90% and vehicle crashes with injuries by 75%. Drivers should expect delays and detours during both phases of construction, as lane restrictions on I-8 and ramp closures at Gila Ridge and Araby roads will be necessary. Alternate routes will include Avenue 8 ½ E and Avenue 3E. ADOT will maintain one lane of traffic in each direction on Araby Road, but drivers should plan for reduced speed limits and delays.
