Woman arrested for trying to smuggle marijuana into prison

Calipatria State Prison officials said they arrested a 41-year-old woman after she allegedly attempted to smuggle marijuana into the prison.

Officials said Valeria Victoria Varnado, of San Bernardino, Calif. smelled of marijuana. Officers searched Varnado and found four latex bindles, containing a combined weight of 17.1 grams of suspected marijuana, which has an estimated prison value of $4,275.

Varnado was booked into the Imperial County Jail and she is facing felony charges. Varnado faces three to five years in prison if convicted.

Varnado is an approved visitor of an inmate at Calipatria State Prison.
