Property tax proposal rejected

The city of Wellton recently proposed a new property tax levy to help improve the city, however residents failed to jump on board, rejecting the proposal. The property tax levy was projected to raise up to 400,000 dollars a year to help with the city of Wellton’s debt. The only problem? To pass the plan would have meant residents would of had to pay more money, that of which they just don’t have. The town’s businesses have continued to fall by the waste side and the majority of residents live below the poverty line. Town manager, Larry Killman explains how some Wellton residents weren’t even able to participate in the election. “Within that population, there were a number of people that couldn’t vote, our snowbird population primarily, that was from out of town, they would of had a major impact on low income, fixed income, and retired people. So I think that’s why, absolutely the vote went down, because those people couldn’t afford it,” said Killman. He also added that they are now in the process of coming up with a new budget and the city plans to raise fees on some of their other uses, one of which could be their golf course facility.
