Ducey signs good Samaritan bill for hot car rescues

Gov. Doug Ducey has signed legislation providing lawsuit protections for people who break into cars to rescue children or pets.

Ducey signed House Bill 2494 sponsored by Republican Sen. John Kavanagh Thursday.

The governor said in a written statement the measure will protect good Samaritans who take action to save children or pets and sends a signal that breaking a car window should be the last consideration when someone’s life is on the line.

Ducey mentioned the proposal in January’s state of the state address.

Republican Rep. Eddie Farnsworth says the bill is unneeded because of good Samaritan laws already in place. He also says it wrongly raises animals to the level and rights of children.

Kavanagh says his bill requires a reasonable belief that there is real danger.
