Social media scam targets drivers near border

The state of Arizona has seen a trend in social media scams recently, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Officials said recruiters are placing advertisements on social media platforms and offering money to those who are willing to drive stolen vehicles from Arizona to various ports of entry. However, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said most of the job postings are scams. Those who fall victim are unaware that a particular vehicle is stolen. For that reason, DPS encourage people to be cautious online. Trooper Kameron Lee with the Arizona DPS said recruiters commonly target those who are persuaded by quick means of earning money. “They know they can catch people,” Lee said. “People that may be in a situation where they’re struggling financially if they can maker a quick buck.” Multiple reports have been made near the Nogales port of entry. However, Lee said the San Luis port has yet to see such cases. “As far as our agency goes, we haven’t really responded to any [near San Luis,] Lee said. “Does that mean it’s never going to happen? No. We won’t say that, we just haven’t seen it yet.” Lee also said people should look out for particular warning signs. According to Lee, if the post seems too good to be true, it’s best to stay away. “If it seems too good to be true, you’ve got that gut feeling there’s something a little off there?” Lee said. “There probably is.”
