Jackrabbit Pass area fire update

The Yuma Fire Department said since Saturday evening a fire has been burning west of Avenue A in the 2300 block of west County 12th Street. It’s a very large green waste/mulch fire and it is creating a great deal of smoke. This smoke is generating calls and complaints to the City of Yuma and to the Yuma Fire Department. The fire is burning outside of the Yuma city limits and not within the jurisdiction, or authority, of the City of Yuma or the Yuma Fire Department.

When this fire was first reported, it was unclear if the address was within the municipal boundaries of the City of Yuma, or if it was in unincorporated Yuma County. The Yuma Fire Department responded and provided preliminary fire suppression efforts until the jurisdiction could be confirmed. Once it was confirmed that the actual location (Blue Sky Burning and Recycling, 2375 W County 12th Street) was outside of the City of Yuma, the fire scene was turned over to the Rural/Metro Fire Department. Rural/Metro has shared that there was no burn permit issued for this fire.

YFD would like people to direct questions regarding the fire to the Rural/Metro Fire Department, and questions regarding the air quality to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and/or the Yuma County Health Department.
