Tax Tip Tuesday: Need an Extension?

In tonight’s edition of Tax Tip Tuesday, we learn how people can get an extension on their tax return and how much it would cost. Every year there are tax payers who are late on filing their taxes and don’t know what to do. The first step is to go to, “irs.gov” and click on the free file icon. That is where you can file your tax return electronically for free. IRS spokesman Bill Brunson explains that through the IRS, one can request an extension to file. “One of the functions through IRS free file, is the ability for the tax payer, at any dollar amount of income that they have, to request an extension to file. The automatic extension takes a couple of minutes. There’s no charge and it gives you an additional 6 months of time to submit the information,” said Brunson. Bill Brunson also added that there is no requirement for a person to get an extension and by filing one, it will prevent any late filing penalties from happening.
