University’s across region sign memorandum

In the Desert Southwest, agriculture and manufacturing jobs are important. That’s why universities from Mexico to Baja,California to Yuma are planning on working together. In hopes to educate students through out the region.

“This sets the ground work for our future work. After we sign the memorandum in the next 90 days we’ll be putting together a work plan. Where we’ll be more specific how we’ll do some of the educational exchanges,” says Yuma County Deputy Administrator Paul Melcher.

These educational exchanges that many city leaders as well as universities hope to build the local economy.

“We’re looking at economic development as a region. We know that infrastructure is important. Recruiting manufacturing those types of jobs are important,” says Melcher.

That’s why city leaders and university leaders came together on Wednesday to sign a memorandum that would build a bridge between all of the different programs.

“Them to come here and our students to be able to go there. To partner on different research opportunities,” says Tanya Hodges with University of Arizona.

Now those looking for a degree in Mexico or the U.S. will have an opportunity to participate in some of the programs the universities are planning to offer.

We all live in the same region so theres a lot of the same region so theres a lot of the same necessities that are happening here in Yuma, Imperial and Mexico. So were hoping that we can all come together and solving some of those problems and then educating our students,” says Hodges.
