Calexico man is allegedly attacked with shotgun

A Calexico man was allegedly attacked with a shotgun on a public residential street on Saturday night.

Calexico Police Detective Armando Orozco said, “City units responded to the area of Kloke and Calexico Street in reference to a shooting. He had a serious gunshot wound to the leg.”

Calexico police found victim wounded and in serious condition.

“The subject was later transported to an out-of-area hospital,” Orozco said.

Based on the victim’s description, police began looking for two suspects.
“One subject was arrested that evening,” Orozco said.

Police arrested a woman identified as 32-year-old Gloria Bernal the same night of the shooting. Then, police said they had a lucky break the very next evening.

“The subject was spotted about the 900th block of Imperial by one of our off-duty officers who called it in,” Orozco said.

The off-duty officer stayed on the suspect.

“The subject was followed to the 900th block of Paulin,” Orozco said.

Police and Border Patrol closed off the streets around the area, boxing the suspect in.

“Once that perimeter was set up, officers arrived in the area where they made contact with the subject,” Orozco said.

The man identified as Ali bahrambegeygui tried to avoid arrest.

“The subject, once making eye contact with the officers, fled the area, running through a yard in the nine hundredth block of Paulin,” Orozco said.

But the off-duty officer wasn’t going to let the suspect escape.

“One of our officers remained in visual eye contact with the suspect while he was hiding and directed the officers to where he was hiding, and the officers were able to make contact and were able to place him into custody,” Orozco said.

The investigation is ongoing as police search for the weapon used in the alleged attack and for a motive.

For now, the two suspects are behind bars and the victim is recovering.
“Subject is stable at this time and is expected to recuperate,” Orozco said.
