International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day. A day celebrating the social, economic and cultural achievements of women. Its also a day that celebrates gender equality. International women’s day has been observed since the early 1900’s; The official day was celebrated by the United Nations in 1975. Fast forward to 2001 and the global International Women’s Day website was finally launched. In 2011, President Obama proclaimed the month of March to be ” Women’s history month”. Locals in downtown Yuma expressed their thoughts on the day and what it meant to them. Dolores Nagle said it means, “Equal rights, equal pay.” Grace Webb said, “I guess i’m glad they have a day to celebrate it, but it’s kind of insulting that we need one day, instead of just celebrating ‘us’ all the time.” Stephanie Cobian said, “I think its something very nice for overall people to celebrate and support.” Celebration ceremonies and marches were held all day long all over the world.
