Child struck by car, driver flees

A Calexico 9-year-old boy is recovering from injuries after being hit by a car on Tuesday afternoon as he walked home from school.

Calexico Police Officer Peter West said, “The child was crossing the roadway southbound across Fifth Street at Heffernan Avenue.”

The boy was walking with two friends when he was struck.

The boy “ran in front of a car, according to witnesses. Was struck by the vehicle,” West said.

The driver did not help the child.

“The vehicle initially stopped, rolled down their window, asked the child some questions as far as, are you ok? And then fled the scene. They didn’t get out of the car, didn’t help the child, didn’t call for help,” West said.

Even though the child might be at fault, West explained, the driver may be facing a felony charge for allegedly leaving the scene.

“In this case we are doing an active investigation for a felony hit and run,” West said.

Police are now looking for the vehicle.

“The vehicle’s been identified as a gray Nissan Armada SUV. It’s one of the bigger SUVs. Gray in color. Possibly with California license plates. However, unknown license plate on the vehicle,” West said.

Authorities are also looking for the driver.

“The driver’s been identified as a female. No further description on her. And a possible male or female passenger,” West said.

The boy was taken to a medical facility by family members. His condition is unknown.

Police want the publics’ help in finding the driver or want the driver to turn herself in.
