The Annual AG tour
JV Farms of Yuma gave their Annual AG tour today to give local people in the industry as well as interested onlookers a more in depth look at what agriculture is about. JV Farms has a diversified ground base that spans from Yuma to Gila valley to Wellton and Bard, California. The company works with all of the major vegetable shipping operations, offering quality products for the domestic and international markets.
The tour was meant to inform people about what they do as a company, the history of the area and also to give a more detailed look at the everyday process of farming.
General Manager, Matt McGuire, who has been with the company for 10 years, informed us, on the type of pro-duce they grow as well as an unlikely threat that many people wouldn’t think of when growing such crops. ”We grow romaine, iceberg lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, spring mix spinach, celery and kale. One of the things we have to manage is irrigation. One of the reasons we have to manage irrigation so heavily is because as we water these crops, for every acre foot we have, it brings in about 2,000 pounds of salt. Those salts have to be managed so we don’t hurt those crops.” McGuire also adds that kale has grown in popularity in recent years making it a prime money maker for the company. The tour was hosted by YFVA and has been running for about four years now. For more information, you can head to their website at… http://www.jvsmithcompanies.com
