Eight people hospitalized after car accident near Yuma International Airport

An accident on one of Yuma’s busiest roadways sent eight people to the hospital Wednesday night.

The accident happened Wednesday evening, sometime before 6 p.m., at the intersection of 32nd St. and Pacific Ave.

Police say a 1995 Honda Accord was traveling eastbound on 32nd Street and was attempting to make a left hand turn onto Pacific Avenue. The driver of the Honda, a 24-year-old woman, failed to yield to oncoming traffic and collided with a 2003 Kia Sorento that was traveling westbound on 32nd Street.

Police say there were seven occupants and two dogs in the Honda. They included two women, two men, and three children. The children were a 4-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy.

There was one occupant in the Kia, a 26-year-old woman.

All eight occupants were taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center. Three of the passengers from the Honda, including one of the children, were later flown to a Phoenix hospital with serious- though non-life threatening- injuries.

Police say the driver of the Honda was at fault and may be facing charges for driving with too many passengers.

Police say the case is under investigation and impairment may be a factor.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact police. Information can also be reported anonymously through 78-CRIME.

Police rerouted traffic which was backed up for several blocks.
