Yuma artist wins top honors in world-renowned jewelry competition

Local artist, Lorenzo Chavez, is receiving top honors from the American Gem Trade Association. This is his second year being awarded.

Chavez, owner of Lorenzo Jewelers, in Yuma says he’s honored to have industry leaders appreciate his work.

Chavez’s piece, named “Gift from the Abyss,” was awarded “Best of: Fashion Forward” for 2017.

“I see the piece as being at the bottom of the ocean, at the furthest point. Then, being born and floating up to the ocean,” said Chavez of his inspiration for the pendant.

More than 500 pieces competed for awards.

Chavez also won a Platinum Nomination award in 2016 for another pendant creation, “Big Sky.”

Each piece is expected to appraise at over $50,000.
